Chapter Thirteen

Once inside her house, she repacked her bag and walked out to her car. She wasn’t going to wait around on the off chance he might want to see her. If he wanted her, he was going to have to work for it, and she still didn’t know what she’d do if he actually did want to see her again. She’d take the rest of the weekend to think about it.

Saturday and Sunday flew past, and it was late when she got home and parked. She dragged herself into the house.

A scream tore from her throat when she opened her bedroom door and saw Savage leaning against her headboard, playing with a knife.

She pressed her hand to her chest and dropped her bag. “What the hell are you doing in my house?”

“Where have you been?” he asked calmly.

Her mouth dropped open. “You think you have the right to ask me anything?”

“Where have you been?” he asked again.

She eyed the knife in his hands, apprehensive, but she wasn’t going to show him any fear. Then she crossed her arms over her chest. “Savage, I’d like you to leave.”

He sighed and put his knife in the holder at his side, then sat up. “Listen, I know I fucked up.”

She hated to see the swirling emotions in his eyes. “Yeah. But it’s okay. Now, can you leave?”

“You’re not mad at me?” he asked.

“Not anymore, and it was mostly hurt, not anger.”

“So, we’re okay?”

“There is no we. I’m not mad at you, but I’m not going to put myself through that again.”

“So, you’re not going to give me another chance and maybe let me explain?”

She’d thought about what she’d do if she saw him again, and she went back and forth if she would give him another try.

“I don’t know if it will matter.”

He stood and took a few steps toward her and grasped her shoulders. “Give me a chance.”

She stared up at him and couldn’t get over how handsome he was. He looked exhausted, too. “Haven’t you slept?”

“Not really. I came back about an hour after you left. I raced over here, and you were gone. I looked around town but never found you, so I parked myself here.”

Oh, wow, he had made a considerable effort to talk to her, which meant a lot to her.

“Okay, we can talk.”

He looked relieved as he drew her over, sat on the mattress, and pulled her in between his knees. He kept a hold of her hand and looked up at her.

“When I woke up Saturday morning, I felt an emotion I never had before. I didn’t know what it was. All I knew was it overwhelmed me. After talking to Fury yesterday, I now understand that I was content. Fuck, I’ve never felt that before in my life. It seems every day is a struggle for me. I’ll tell you more about my childhood later. Most of my emotions were negative, and to feel contented, to be truly happy … it gave me … hope.
